FOREST FINGERS

Forest Fingers - A film installation communicating an invented folktale, through poetic storytelling & performance with a collection of environmental aids in use to reconnect innately with local nature
Briefed to create a folktale, I took inspiration from my urban childhood enriched by countryside foraging: a girl escapes to a forest dream world, rejecting grey city life. Communicating with her imaginary trees through root systems, she too grows roots and reconnects with real nature, returning trees to cities and listening to their needs. Communicating this invented folktale, I worked instinctively with foraged items like twigs, leaves and abandoned tools to create aids for reconnection with nature. These rudimentary tools are shaped organically around the body and the plants they came from, with their uses left undefined, enabling users to reconnect innately with local landscapes.
Through film and performance, you are invited to take the perspective of the user of these foraged aids to reconnect with nature. Both the slow, repetitive interaction with the trees above and a meditative retelling of the folktale combine to create a hypnotic calm - a space in which to reunite with the forest. Watch as the foraged tools seem to grow from hands to become part of the nature they reconnect with, like the girl who grows roots in this folktale.
