OYSTER TABLEWARE
Authenticity & Curiosity

Oyster shells represent an intricate authenticity which I seek to value through curiosity, rather than avoiding the unfamiliar.

To explore this idea, I developed a set of plates, cutlery and drinking vessels from a combination of ceramic and oyster shell fragments. Organic textures, forms and unusual glazes play with the sensory experience and traditional expectations of eating. I created AI imagery and animations of oyster shells to recognise patterns in their surfaces and discover new ways to represent texture. The resulting tableware encourages users to choose curiosity over confusion or disgust. Can we find value in authenticity not in spite of its unfamiliar ‘imperfections’ but because of them?

I collaborated with a group of designers to create a dinner, for which we each contributed a set of tableware representing our personal design values. We came together to share food and conversation about these values, documenting the event through a film.
