PEERING THROUGH ICE

I am inspired by capturing the dreamlike sensation of distant memories, which are often only made up of a few powerful images and feelings but stay with us long into the future.

I remember playing polar bear cubs with my little sister and mother on weekend mornings, under my mum’s duvet in our parent’s “big bed”. The white duvet acted as a cave under the ice, and the folds and forms of the fabric are rocky formations, stalagmites and stalactites. Being small, these seemed much more impressive, spacious and exploratory. I vividly remember the musty yet familiar smell of clean washing and the way the morning light shone through the duvet, cold but brilliant, casting long crisp shadows. The backlit effect enhanced the flowing organic forms of the “ice”. The warmth of being under the covers in the morning enhanced the feeling of hiding from the arctic blizzards. We would explore the cave, a simple duvet expansive enough to become a world. It’s strange to think we were ever small enough to do that.

Experimenting with blender and unreal, I created a duvet-like ice cave form dripping with stalactites and stalagmites, playing with transparency, lighting and the materiality of ice and snow for the dreamlike effect of a distant yet vivid memory.
